Last night at local 2's meeting, it was reported that LIUNA Inspector General Gow told local 2 that it was wrong for all local 2 business agents to receive gifts (hams and knives) from contractors and that it should not happen again. Didn't Local 2 Trustee Randy Dalton (Sept 2000-March 2001) and again as supervisor of local 2 in May 20002-Dec 2003 ever teach his appointees that it was unethical for a union representative in a fiduciary capacity to receive anything of value from an employer (not one red cent)?? And people wonder why LIUNA trusteeships and supervisions do not eliminate corruption. It's because members are not educated about their rights as well as their responsibilities, about ETHICS.

Jack Ahern (IUOE local 30 ) categorically denies he was arrested or indicted recently and Cooper Brown, business manager of IUOE local 94 (Stationary engineers-not construction)  states that "Carney was not arrested or indicted, that these are false rumors from hysterical dissidents who don't go to union meetings to learn about the high costs of medical services." Prosecutors called the pair "the king and queen" of a local Chicago labor group and allege Serpico and Busillo used factory workers' money to get themselves sweet personal loan deals to buy a small movie studio, refinance an ocean-view condo and purchase "a three-story castle in the tony North Shore suburbs." Also on trial is Serpico business partner Gilbert Cataldo. Defense attorneys argue that the government has a case based only on speculation. The jury is expected to begin deliberations today.

Local 1076 (Pontiac Michigan) forced to comply with request for its IRS Form 990, a report every LIUNA tax exempt entity must provide by federal regulation to anyone requesting who is willing to pay reasonable copying costs. 1076's attorney, like many other attorneys providing legal advice to labor unions, was unaware of this requirement despite his ethical duty to stay abreast of laws and regulations affecting his clients. Pointing out to union members that their union's legal counsel typically protects corrupt incumbent officers to the detriment of the members  is not news in LIUNA where LIUNA attorneys can not recognize a conflict of interest if they tried.
